In an email newsletter today, New York’s Cheim & Read gallery, a longtime Chelsea resident, revealed plans to transition into being what it called a “private practice, concentrating on the secondary market, sculpture commissions and special projects.” The gallery, which opened in Chelsea in 1997, said it would continue working with the artists and estates on its roster and showing at art fairs.
Additionally, the gallery announced plans to move uptown. A location for their new space, which will host small-scale presentations starting in January 2019, was not immediately named by the gallery. Maria Bueno, a partner at the gallery, has been appointed the director of Cheim & Read’s new uptown location.
Cheim & Read was opened in Chelsea in 1997 by John Cheim and Howard Read, who had previously been directors of New York’s Robert Miller Gallery. It was inaugurated in a former garage on West 23rd Street and then moved in 2001 to its current venue on West 25th Street.
“We are deeply grateful for your collaboration and support over the past twenty-one years and look forward to continuing the legacy of the gallery in its new form,” Cheim and Read said in the email announcing the news today.
Currently listed on Cheim & Read’s slate are Ghada Amer, Diane Arbus, Lynda Benglis, Louise Fishman, Al Held, Milton Resnick, and Sean Scully, among others. Earlier this year, the Joan Mitchell estate, which they had long represented, went to David Zwirner. A summer group show curated by Jack Pierson and a Louise Bourgeois solo exhibition this fall will close out Cheim & Read’s run on West 25th Street.
