ESPN Plans Extensive News and Information Coverage for 2018 World Cup

ESPN plans extensive English and Spanish-language news and information coverage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia across its media platforms in the United States during the month-long tournament, June 14 – July 15.

ESPN’s English-language coverage will include a special one-hour SportsCenter – primarily on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. ET – on every match day of the tournament. The SportsCenter editions will focus primarily on World Cup news and analysis. ESPNFC.com correspondents will also provide on-site reports from Russia. ESPN FC, the global soccer program available exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+, the ESPN App and ESPN.com, will also air daily.

ESPN Deportes, the 24-hour Spanish-language sports network, will prominently feature World Cup coverage on SportsCenter, Fútbol Picante, Jorge Ramos y su Banda, Raza Deportiva, Los Capitanes, Cronómetro, and more, providing expansive news and analysis throughout the competition. Much of the 2018 World Cup content on these shows will originate from the ESPN Deportes set in Moscow, overlooking the Kremlin.

Enhancing the anticipation and excitement of each match of the 2018 World Cup, ESPN Fantasy is offering ESPN FC Match Predictor, ESPN’s first truly global game that gives fans the chance to pick the winners for each round and compete for prizes throughout the tournament.

Match Predictor is a responsive web-based game available to fans on smartphone, tablet and computer in three languages – English, Spanish, Portuguese – across 13 global editions of ESPN.com, with localized design, branding and language translation.

In addition to choosing the winner of each match, fans can also earn points answering a combination of multiple-choice questions that vary for each round of the World Cup. These Bonus Questions cover several match elements, including score differential, over/under, “Man of Match” and more.

Also, before the World Cup begins on June 14, fans can make tournament-long predictions by choosing the overall World Cup Champion, winner of the Golden Boot, and each winner of the Group Stage (A-H).

Park the Bus with Taylor Twellman: Park the Bus will stream live on Twitter (live.twitter.com/espn) during opening round Mexican National Team matches – vs. Germany (June 17), vs. South Korea (June 23) and vs. Sweden (June 27) – and during the knockout stage of the World Cup. E:60 on Putin’s Game – Sunday, June 10 at 9 a.m. ET (ESPN)

Leading into the 2018 World Cup, E:60 examines Russian President Vladimir Putin and corruption in his country. President Putin used the 2014 winter games in Sochi to present himself as host and to enrich the oligarchs who support him. Russians who tried to expose corruption became the victims of brutal retaliation. Also, Putin’s sports minister oversaw the most extensive, state-run doping scandal in history, and yet, the world’s most prominent sports federations – the IOC and FIFA – have passed up almost every opportunity to hold Russia to account. Now Putin will welcome thousands of fans to the World Cup, the largest sporting event in the world. Reporter T.J Quinn tells the story of corruption in the 2018 World Cup host country.
