Baltimore County Police identified the 16-year old accused of killing a County police officer May 21 in the Perry Hall community of Baltimore County.
A statement of probable cause issued today identified Dawnta Anthony Harris as the suspect in the killing of Officer Amy Caprio.
Harris has been charged as an adult, with first degree murder in the death of Caprio, who was killed when she confronted a group of teens in a jeep, which had been described as a “suspicious vehicle” in the Perry Hall neighborhood. Three other teen suspects are in custody according to police.
“All three, teenage males. Detective(s) have verified that the group were involved in burglaries in the area. Officers will be in the area today to canvas for property stolen during these burglaries,” stated County police via Twitter.
According to a report by CBS News, Caprio, who would have been a four-year veteran of the department in July, was seriously injured when she was run over by the jeep authorities say was driven by Harris. The officer may have been responding to a burglary in progress. According to the police, a witness reported hearing a pop before Caprio was run over, but investigators are not sure how the officer was ultimately killed; whether she died because she was run over by the vehicle or she was shot, or both.
Police say Harris was arrested near the location where the jeep was abandoned. Allegedly he told a County detective he had been waiting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, while others were in the process of robbing a home.
According to the statement of probable cause, Harris also told the detective he “drove at the officer.”
Harris was scheduled to appear before a judge this afternoon in Towson. No word yet on what the other three teens have been charged with, or if they will also be charged as adults.
