The two actors are set to lead a currently unnamed film directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
Teyonah Parris is joining Denzel Washington in an upcoming, currently untitled thriller directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
First reported by Deadline, the film, which is slated for a theatrical release, was written by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner. The story centers on a former police detective serving a life sentence who learns he has terminal brain cancer. Granted a compassionate release with just six months to live, he returns home hoping to reconnect with the estranged daughter he left behind and meet a grandson he never knew existed. But as he tries to make amends and leave his troubled past behind, he discovers that the past may not be finished with him.
Washington most recently appeared in Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” alongside A$AP Rocky. He is also set to star in “The Take,” an unconventional heist film featuring Danai Gurira, Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones, which is expected to arrive on Netflix in 2027.
Parris, meanwhile, continues to build an eclectic filmography. Her most recent film role was in this year’s “Matchbox: The Movie,” alongside Gurira, Jessica Biel, John Cena and Golshifteh Farahani. In a recent interview with ESSENCE, the 39-year-old actress discussed how she approaches choosing roles at this stage of her career, explaining that she looks for stories and characters that genuinely interest her.
“Is this a story I want to tell? Is this a character that I find interesting?” Parris said.
She also considers how a project can contribute to expanding the narratives and perspectives represented in stories about the African diaspora. While she wants to tell all kinds of stories, Parris said she is mindful of whether a role offers her the opportunity to explore something she has not done before.
