D.L. Hughley asks Erica Campbell why the White House still stands if prayer works. The gospel star fires back on faith, politics and religion as a weapon.
Erica Campbell stepped into one of the toughest hot seats this week, joining D.L. Hughley and Jasmine Sanders for “4 The Hard Way,” a segment built on blunt questions and no easy outs. The result was a lively, funny and often pointed talk about faith, politics and what it means to be a Christian today.
Hughley wasted no time. Campbell has long said prayer works. So, he asked, why is the White House still standing? Campbell laughed and admitted she had no answer. Then she added, “There’s a lot of us praying.” She later explained that prayer is not a quick fix. “There’s always time, there’s always experience and there’s something to learn,” she said, adding that nothing in life is wasted.
The talk turned to what people should pray for. Hughley said he has never prayed for victory. He prays only for the strength to do his best, and he called praying to win “kind of selfish.” Campbell pushed back with a simple point: God is not too busy to hear everyone. “He’s infinite enough to answer yours and theirs,” she said. “He’s just glad you’re talking to him.”
Hughley joked that he could never serve the devil, because “that would mean I was in government.” Then he got serious. He criticized people who use religion to push harsh policies, pointing to evangelical stances that treat rape and incest as less serious than abortion. “That’s insane,” he said. Campbell agreed the harm is real. She noted that fakes and frauds exist in every walk of life, and she said it stings in a different way when they claim to be Christian. “I don’t serve that man or that person,” she said. “It’s God that I serve.”

Hughley said he respects Christians’ humanity and wishes more of them would respect everyone else’s. That opened the door to a key question: what kind of Christian is Campbell? Her answer centered on love, grace and care for others. That means helping the less fortunate and looking out for children. She also shared a lesson from her mother: “You don’t go through for yourself.” Hard times, she said, become a tool to help others. She pointed to the history of Black Americans overcoming hardship as proof of what is still possible.
Campbell closed with a challenge. She urged believers to study scripture for themselves and not simply follow church tradition. “You’re supposed to get in the book and find out what it says, not just what your church does,” she said. She reminded listeners that Jesus was “fully divine but fully human” and was even betrayed by one of his own disciples.
