Jason Kelce played center for the Philadelphia Eagles for 13 seasons.
So you really can’t blame him for still feeling connected to his old team.
The problem is his ESPN bosses need him to be more neutral when he’s calling games when his old team is playing.
On the recent broadcast from London where the Eagles lost 19-17 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a game turned controversial for its play-calling.
It happened when the Eagles played on Monday Night Football a week ago, too. Even co-host Pat McAfee ribbed Kelce for referring to the Eagles as “we,” in another loss to the Chicago Bears and third-string QB Case Keenum. “Sorry Bears fans,” Kelce said and then while going off air he asked Scott Van Pelt “Did I say ‘we’?”
Before the London game Kelce addressed Jacksonville fans directly on his New Heights podcast, saying that he would clean up the “we” in his broadcast.
“I want to assure Jags fans I’ve seen a lot of the Jags accounts already saying that they’re not looking forward to this. I will be doing my utmost to give you guys the credit you deserve. Jacksonville’s playing as good as any team right now in the AFC. I really do believe that.”
However, old habits die hard.
‘We’re trying to get the “we” out of him,” ESPN producer Jeff Dufine, who oversees international broadcasts, told the Philadelphia Inquirer.
After he retired in 2024, Kelce entered the broadcast booth. This was after he and his brother Travis started the hugely successful New Heights podcast in 2022 which has over 6 million subscribers between YouTube and Instagram.
In 2024, the brothers signed a reported $100M deal with Wondery.
Kelce also signed a $24M, 3-year deal with ESPN in 2024. He’s been praised for his coverage on NFL Network where he will call two more games this year including Pittsburgh vs. New Orleans from Paris on Oct. 26 and one game yet to be determined. He’s in his third year on Monday Night Countdown but his contract is up at the end of the year.
There are some potential open seats on major NFL broadcasts as Troy Aikman is up for a new deal and Tony Romo is out at CBS. However ESPN seems to see the upside in Kelce, who’s also willing to do anything from playing golf to rugby for off-desk segments.
“He sees the game really well,” Dufine said.
