From powder blue to Silver and Black, some NFL uniforms have become just as iconic as the players who wore them.
Everybody has a football jersey that means a little more than the rest. Maybe it was the first jersey you owned as a kid. Maybe your favorite player wore it. Or maybe your team happened to win a championship, a playoff classic, or some other unforgettable game while wearing it.
That is part of what makes uniform debates so fun. The best designs are not always the newest or the flashiest. Sometimes a simple color combination becomes inseparable from an era — Jerry Rice in red and gold, Warren Moon in Columbia blue or Bo Jackson in silver and black. A great uniform can become part of a franchise’s identity before you even see the logo.
And with another NFL season right around the corner, there is probably no better time to look back at some of the cleanest threads the league has ever produced. Of course, this is subjective, but these 10 NFL uniforms have a pretty strong case. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.
There is a reason the Chargers’ powder blue is almost always somewhere near the top of these conversations. The powder blue jersey, white helmet and lightning bolts give them a color combination that basically nobody else in professional football can replicate. The look dates back to the franchise’s early AFL years and became so beloved that the Chargers eventually made powder blue their primary home color again.
Some NFL uniforms do not need a redesign. The Raiders figured that out decades ago. Black jerseys, silver numbers, silver pants and that silver helmet create one of the most intimidating and recognizable looks in sports, and the simplicity is a huge part of why it has aged so well. Whether you associate it with Ken Stabler, Marcus Allen, Bo Jackson or more recent Raiders, the uniform has always looked tough.
Joe Montana and Jerry Rice helped make this combination legendary, but the uniform itself deserves plenty of credit. The bright red jerseys, gold pants and gold helmets fit together without trying to do too much, and the striped sleeves on the classic versions give them just enough extra personality. It also does not hurt that the look became synonymous with one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history.
There are not many uniforms that scream their city quite like Miami’s old aqua, orange and white combination. The classic helmet logo — complete with the dolphin wearing its own football helmet — gives the throwback an extra layer of personality that the modern version simply does not have. The jerseys worn during Miami’s perfect 1972 season are particularly iconic, and the Dolphins’ vintage look remains one of the NFL’s most popular throwbacks.
The Oilers may no longer exist, but their uniforms never really left NFL culture. Columbia blue, red and white created one of the prettiest color combinations the league has ever seen, especially during the Warren Moon era. Tennessee bringing the uniforms back as throwbacks only reminded everybody how good they still look decades later.
Before midnight green became the Eagles’ identity, Philadelphia had one of the loudest colors in football. Kelly green paired with silver pants and the classic winged helmet looked especially good during the Randall Cunningham era, and fans spent years asking the franchise to bring it back. Once the Eagles finally did, it immediately became one of the most popular throwbacks in the league again.
The Broncos’ current look has its fans, but there is something different about that old royal-blue helmet and bright-orange jersey. Denver wore the design throughout the Orange Crush era, with the large “D” and bucking horse logo becoming one of the most memorable helmets in football. It feels unmistakably old-school without looking outdated, which is probably why the modern throwback version was received so well.
Few players looked cooler in a uniform than Eric Dickerson running through defenses in the Rams’ royal blue and yellow. The bright yellow horns wrapping around the blue helmet are one of the strongest helmet designs in NFL history, while the jersey and pants had enough color to stand out without becoming messy. The fact that the Rams eventually moved back toward those colors after years of navy and gold says plenty about how strong the original look was.
Dallas’ white NFL uniform might be one of the most instantly recognizable looks in American sports. The Cowboys began wearing white at home in the 1960s, which helped turn the white jersey, silver-blue pants and iconic star helmet into their signature combination. Plenty of franchises have changed colors, fonts and templates over the decades, but Dallas has largely understood that there is not much reason to mess with something this recognizable.
Sometimes longevity itself becomes part of the appeal. Green Bay’s dark green jerseys, gold helmets and gold pants are tied to multiple generations of football history, from Vince Lombardi’s teams through Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. The Packers have made adjustments over time, but the basic identity has stayed recognizable enough that you can see the colors and immediately think Lambeau Field.
