Kamala Harris urges voters to ‘be too big to rig’ after Supreme Court ruling on mail-in voting

The former vice president says the Supreme Court’s decision is another reason voters must turn out in November.
“This week’s Supreme Court decision is another reminder of what we are up against heading into November,” Harris wrote in an Instagram caption accompanying a video posted Thursday.
In the video, Harris criticized President Donald Trump’s efforts to change the rules surrounding mail-in voting.
“Just this week, the United States Supreme Court backed up the president’s agenda,” Harris said. “He’s trying to make it more difficult for you to go by mail.”
Harris also took aim at Trump for using mail-in voting himself.

“By the way, he votes by mail from Mar-a-Lago, but he doesn’t want you to vote by mail, because he knows you’re paying attention,” she said.
The Supreme Court decision Harris is referring to is the court’s 6-3 decision Monday gave the Trump administration a temporary win in its effort to change how mail-in voting is handled. But the justices did not rule that Trump’s plan is constitutional or that the new voting rules are legal.
Instead, the court said the states challenging Trump’s March executive order went to court too soon. The administration had not yet finalized all of the rules needed to put the order into effect, the justices said. 
Trump’s order calls for new federal requirements for mail ballots, including having states provide voter information to the U.S. Postal Service and requiring specific designs and tracking information on ballot envelopes. The changes could give the federal government a larger role in how states administer mail voting. 
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, one of the three justices who dissented, sharply criticized the majority’s decision. She warned that with the midterms approaching, the ruling could leave states and election officials scrambling to figure out what rules they are supposed to follow.
The decision, Jackson wrote, “needlessly injects chaos and uncertainty into the upcoming midterm elections.” 
And the legal fight is far from over. On Thursday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the Postal Service from enforcing key parts of the new mail-voting rules, putting another hold on the administration’s efforts just days before some states are expected to begin sending ballots. 
For Harris, however, the back-and-forth in the courts is ultimately a reason for voters to pay attention and participate.
“Context is so important,” she said, pointing to rising gas and food prices and the administration’s foreign policy.
She then turned directly to voters.
“They can put more obstacles in our way, but they cannot take away our power,” Harris wrote. “Our answer is to show up, make our voices heard, and turn out in numbers that are too big to rig.”
In the video, she delivered an even simpler message:
“Get out and vote. Let’s get everyone out to vote.”
