From the Hamptons to Saint-Tropez: design fairs PAD and Nomad follow the sun

Art of Luxury magazine, published twice per year by The Art Newspaper, explores how grande marque fashion, jewellery, travel and lifestyle interact with artists, the art market and the museums and heritage sector.
Two collectible design fairs have announced summer editions in especially leisurely locations. The Pavilion of Art and Design (aka PAD, and the OG of the genre) will be popping up in the centre of Saint-Tropez from 12-20 July. Nomad, which started out in Saint Moritz in 2017, and has run editions in Capri and in Abu Dhabi for the first time last November, has chosen the Hamptons.
“Nomad is never about the main cities,” says Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte, its co-founder and director. “It’s a resort concept.” The event will take place from 25-28 June at The Watermill Centre in Water Mill, founded by Robert Wilson, the artist and theatre director.
“We wanted to offer the Nomad community a way to discover another side of America, one that’s intellectual, romantic, creative,” Bellavance-Lecompte says. “Collectors from the Middle East and even parts of Europe will be experiencing the Hamptons for the first time.”
It does not hurt that the area is home to a number of wealthy residents some of whom will open up their homes to VIP visitors. And of course the same can be said of Saint-Tropez. “Behind the shiny image, there is a very serious collector group in this part of France, with very serious houses,” says PAD’s president Patrick Perrin. For the rest, it’s just a short walk from the boat.
