Shamim M. Momin, the founding director and curator of Los Angeles Nomadic Division, announced today that she is leaving the public-art nonprofit to become senior curator at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle.
Momin started LAND in 2009 after more than a decade at the Whitney Museum in New York, where she co-organized the 2004 and 2008 Whitney Biennials and served as branch director of the museum’s now-defunct Altria space in Midtown Manhattan. Her lengthy list of curatorial credits includes shows and projects with Alex Bag, Terence Koh, Mark Grotjahn, Raymond Pettibon, Andrea Zittel, and E. V. Day.
“Shamim’s vast experience in contemporary art, and decades of working with global artists and enlivening the communities she serves, will greatly benefit our region and the field,” Sylvia Wolf, the Henry Art Gallery’s director, said in a statement. “We welcome her intellectual rigor, stellar scholarship, and commitment to collections access. We look forward to working with Shamim to find new, innovative ways to engage our community.”
In a letter to LAND supporters, co-signed by Kelsey Lee Offield, the president of the group’s board, Momin said that, since its founding in 2009, LAND “has presented over 100 exhibitions, performances, and programs, with over 400 artists, in 30 cities nationally and internationally. In this time, I have been incredibly proud and gratified to help shape this organizational identity and to collaborate with an extraordinary group of artists, colleagues, supporters, and, of course, the amazing LAND board and staff who have dedicated themselves so fully to LAND’s success throughout this last decade.”
Going forward, LAND will be led by two co-directors, according to that letter. Holding one of those positions will be Allison M. Keating, its present director of development and administration, who has been given the title co-director and curator of performance. The hunt is now on for the other co-director, whose title will include chief curator.
Momin leaves LAND on June 30 and starts at the Henry on September 1.
