Last month, I launched TheARTReport series on Instagram. Just so you have a flavor of it, each week, I’ll highlight one artwork or art exhibition on my grid, spotlighting talented artists, recommending a must-read or watch, and offering helpful tips or thing to do.
I hope you enjoy this one because we get into the weeds of the most exciting film of 2025, Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan. Of course, I had to discuss art first, so enjoy the full read and leave a comment!
Art – Did you know that Artist Ernie Barnes painted two versions of the iconic Sugar Shack? The work depicts dynamic, elongated figures dancing in a packed Black music hall in segregated mid-century North Carolina. The first version was acquired by Motown star Marvin Gaye, who featured it on the cover of his 1976 album I Want You. Barnes created this second version in 1976, and the painting gained additional popularity when it was added to the end credits of the groundbreaking 1970s CBS sitcom Good Times, which centered on a Black family in the Chicago housing projects with an artist-son named J.J., played by Jimmie Walker. Information from The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
