In more unbelievable news a hacker group called USDoD is claiming to have stolen data and files from a company named National Public Data (NPD) that could affect billions of Americans!  The alleged stolen files were taken in April of 2024 and contain 2.7 billion records listing American’s full names, addresses, date of birth, phone numbers, and social security numbers.
National Public Data (NPD) is a company based in Coral Springs, Florida.  According to their website, NPD provides services such as background checks for employers, investigators and other businesses that want to check people’s backgrounds. Its searches include criminal records, vital records, SSN traces and more information.

Bloomberg Law has reported that a California resident by the name of Christopher Hofmann has filed a lawsuit against National Public Data (NPD) claiming that his identity theft protection services notified him that his personal information was included in a leak on the dark web in the “nationalpublicdata.com” breach.  The lawsuit states that hackers have gained access to the personal information of “billions of individuals”.  If your data has been stolen, thieves can attempt to take out credit, loans, and more in your name.
How can you protect yourself?  Credit experts recommend freezing your credit files at the three big credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. This is a free service but know that if you apply for credit you will have to unfreeze your accounts with the credit bureaus before.  Another way to protect yourself is to sign up for credit protection service and using two-factor authentication in your accounts helps to keep predators out.  Last, but not least, get a copy of our credit reports and review everything.  If you see something that doesn’t look right, take action and contact that creditor.
