Jada Pinkett Smith recently revealed that she and Gabrielle Union reconciled after almost twenty years of a private feud. Union shared her side of the story while speaking to Today show host Hoda Kotb on May 7 about the beef that left the two actresses giving each other the cold shoulder.

“Jada nor I ever used the word ‘feud,’ so it just became more of a media creation,” Union explained. “Back in the day, neither one of us knows what originally took place back then, but the people that we had around us were like, ‘Well, you know how she feels about you…’ And then it was like, ‘OK. Girl, bye.’ For 17 years.”

The Breaking In star said despite their husbands being friends and sharing some of the same political views the two never sat down and spoke about what they were being told. Instead, Union said they were just quiet. “And even though we’re both very outspoken women—we’re both activists, our husbands are friends, I’ve worked with her husband—we both felt we had too much pride and too many insecurities to just say, ‘Hey, did that ever actually happen, or was that a creation of someone else who did not want to see two women rise together?’”

The two cleared the air about their beef on Pinkett’s Facebook talk show Red Table Talk, where they discussed how to come together to use their platforms to address the issues that matter to them both.
