The US artist Jeff Koons has put works of art on the moon, announcing on Instagram that his Moon Phases series of sculptures have landed on the lunar landscape.
“We’ve landed!” Koons writes. “I am so honoured to have my Moon Phases artworks be part of the Odysseus mission.”
The Jeff Koons: Moon Phases Project was launched from Cape Canaveral at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 15 February.
It has involved 125 one-inch miniature Moons sculptures, each representing a phase of the Moon, sent out on a lunar lander known as Nova C (Odysseus). The works are also inscribed with the names of key cultural and historical figures such as Mozart, Galileo, Cleopatra, and Leonardo da Vinci.
The initiative, first announced in 2022, has been developed by the scientist and designer Chantelle Baier—who is the founder and chief executive of 4SPACE company—who collaborated with Koons on creating the sculptures.
