Frieze New York has named Cooper Cole gallery the winner of its 2018 Frame Prize, which is given to an exhibitor in the fair’s “Frame” section for presentations by emerging galleries.
The Toronto-based gallery is currently presenting the work of sculptor Tau Lewis at Frieze. Lewis’s figurative works investigate black identity through assemblages of found and repurposed materials that she sews together. Her labor-intensive process is meant to serve as a form of restoration and healing.
This year’s jury was comprised of Aspen Art Museum curator Courtenay Finn, Kunsthalle Basel director and curator Elena Filipovic, and Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles curator Jamillah James. According to a release, the jury “commended the manner in which the presentation [of Lewis’ work by Cooper Cole] dealt with sculpture in an incredibly unique way. They felt the young self-taught artist’s work was rich and intense, and that this radiated out from the booth.”
Hong Kong’s Empty Gallery and Los Angeles’s Château Shatto received special commendations for their presentations by Jacqueline Kiyomi Gordon and Van Hanos, respectively.
