“What would you do if you were left alone?” A question I read on LinkedIn this past week. Initially, I couldn’t find an answer to this question, but as I sat in the Kennedy Center late last night for D-Nice, Club Quarantine hosted in an Opera House would be his answer.
In 2020, we were all looking for sources of joy due to the pandemic. For me, the source of joy was not making bread loaves but listening and dancing to D-nice’s DJ sets in my apartment. I remember one of the many Club Quarantine nights; it comforted me to smile and dance. As we all know, there weren’t many moments of joy that year, so having Club Quarantine helped me survive one of the darkest periods in US History and the world.
I sat in the first tier, amazed by D-Nice’s creation. Between the stage lighting, visuals, storytelling (Hip Hop’s craft), crowd involvement, special guests, honoring and celebrating the city’s rich Black culture (HBCUs and Go-go music), and acknowledgment of history being made was a truly fulfilling experience. His special guests were Too $hort, Faith Evans, EPMD, LeToya Luckett, Digable Planets, Israel Houghton, Eric Benét, DJ Clark Kent, Kenny Burns, and Igmar Thomas’s Revive Orchestra for this historic celebration.
If you can go to a live Club Quarantine, do it for you and witness what happens when Black people are unbothered because nothing but magic happens! DJ D-Nice is officially the first DJ and Hip Hop artist to headline the Kennedy Center Opera House.
