Faena Art has awarded its $75,000 Faena Prize for the Arts to Tamar Guimarães and Kasper Akhøj, who both live and work in Copenhagen. The prize solicits proposals for projects that focus on the concept of time while also interacting with the architecture of the Faena Art Center Buenos Aires. Guimarães and Akhøj will receive $25,000 and an additional budget for as much as $50,000 to be used for the production of an exhibition at the center in Buenos Aires in 2019.
Special mention awards were given to Vivian Caccuri and Ishmael Randall Weeks, who will each receive a $1,000.
The 2018 Faena Art Prize jury, who received more than 300 proposals from more than 70 countries, included Carlos Basualdo, chair of the Faena Circle curator of contemporary art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Anita Dube, artist and curator for the fourth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale; Pablo León de la Barra, curator at large at the Guggenheim Museum in New York; and Franklin Sirmans, director of the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
In a statement, the jury said, “Among the strong group of finalists Tamar Guimarães and Kasper Akhøj’s winning proposal distinguished itself by rethinking duration and addressing the context of Buenos Aires on multiple levels. Tamar and Kasper’s practice is interdisciplinary at its core, based on rigorous research and elements of theater, music, architecture, and politics in a highly participatory manner. It is a post-disciplinary, post-colonial practice that retains the kind of reflection on its own process that belongs to the very tradition of modern art.”
