The “Wall of Respect” is a mural by Mural Arts’ staff artist, Willis Humphrey, at UPenn’s Institute of Contemporary Art. It coincides with their current exhibition celebrating African American Art, “The Freedom Principle: Experiments in Art and Music, 1965 to Now.” The mural is a modern remix of the original “Wall of Respect” from 1960s Chicago, which featured portraits of Black leaders, artists, creators, and musicians. Students engaged with the Mural Arts Art Education after school program at Olney Charter HS contributed to the mural by determining 3 people whose portraits they wanted in the mural. The students designed and painted the portraits in the classroom, and then installed the portraits onto the mural on location at the ICA. The selected portraits were Janelle Monae, Alicia Keys, and Kevin Hart. Participating students were Alixandria C., Elianna M., Jennifer B., Cliff L., Darwin M., & Alexis G.
