Ireland’s Minister of Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht has announced that Eva Rothschild will represent Ireland at the 2019 Venice Biennale. Her pavilion will be curated by Mary Cremin, the director of Void gallery in Derry.
Rothschild, who was born in Dublin and is currently based in London, is known for her sculptures and installations that draw on the language of 1960s Minimalism. A recent exhibition at 303 Gallery in New York featured a steel and Jesmonite structure that connected the space’s floor and ceiling, as well as a spray-painted tower of polyurethane blocks and a series of stools. For the artist, these are works about how one’s presence can be felt in the most basic of objects.
In a statement, Rothschild explained the her idea for her pavilion, which will include an immersive work with political underpinnings. “My intention is to make a sculptural environment which engages with current social changes through embodiment, presence, and materiality,” she said. “I want to create a situation that suggests multiple sculptural possibilities for rearrangement and reordering in which it becomes difficult to distinguish renewal from collapse.”
Past artists to have represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale include Jesse Jones (2017), Sean Lynch (2015), Richard Mosse (2013), and Corban Walker (2011).
