Bugada & Cargnel gallery in Paris has “ceased its activities” at its Belleville space, according to a statement posted to its website by the gallery’s founders, Claudia Cargnel and Frédéric Bugada. Bugada told ARTnews in an email that his plan is “to continue our operations, but in a different form. For now we have stopped representing the artists we used to work with. Plans for the future are still under development, so I [can’t] say much more.”
Having first opened as Cosmic Galerie in 2002 in the Marais district, Bugada & Cargnel had been located at its current address, 7-9 Rue de l’Équerre, for more than 12 years. In that time, Bugada & Cargnel established itself as a mainstay of the city’s Belleville neighborhood, which has since become home to a group of trendy French galleries showing emerging artists, including Sultana, 22,48 m2, Galerie Balice Hertling, High Art, and Galerie Antoine Levi.
Bugada & Cargnel’s focus had been emerging and mid-career artists. Over the years, the gallery staged solo exhibitions by Pierre Bismuth, Julio Le Parc, Cyprien Gaillard, Graham Collins, Julian Charrière, and Gardar Eine Einarsson, among others.
In the statement, the gallery’s founders wrote, “We wish to thank all those, artists, gallery staff, collectors, curators, art critics, art lovers, who accompanied us, supported us, trusted us, or simply appreciated the exhibitions we organized and our work during all these years.” They teased future plans, adding, “This isn’t goodbye!”
