Library media specialist at Loch Raven Technical Academy earns grant to promote reading, anti-bullying

TOWSON, MD. – Tatanisha Love, library media specialist at Loch Raven Technical Academy, has been granted a $1,000 Inspire Special Event Grant from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Inspire Special Grant Subcommittee. The grant is sponsored by Marney Welmers.

The AASL Inspire Special Event Grant supports a special event so that an existing public middle or high school library can enhance its extracurricular activities to increase student academic achievement.

Love plans to use the grant to purchase copies of the graphic novel “New Kid” by Jerry Craft. “We are going to use this as a way to promote reading and discussion,” Love said. “We are also going to engage participating students in a project-based learning opportunity to promote anti-bullying efforts.” She anticipates that the project will begin this summer.

The award will be presented to Love at the American Library Association’s 2020 Annual Conference in Chicago this June.

Love has earned a bachelor’s degree in English/liberal arts from Norfolk State University, a master’s degree in library science from Towson University, a master’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and an educational specialist degree and Certificate of Advanced Studies in Education from Notre Dame of Maryland University. Love joined Baltimore County Public Schools as an English teacher nearly 24 years ago. She has been a library media specialist for more than 14 years. Love is the delegate for the Maryland Association of School Libraries, and last week, she learned that she has been appointed as a member of the ALA Committee on Library Advocacy. Her two-year appointment to the advocacy committee begins in June.
