GirlTrek, a large health advocacy nonprofit for Black women and Black girls is bridging the end of Black History Month and the beginning of Women’s History month with the hashtag #ThankBlackWomen.
“This February 29th, the last day of Black History month, join us in flooding the internet with love letters to Black women,” said GirlTrek cofounder, T. Morgan Dixon, via press release. “This single collective action will shift the atmosphere. By the time the world catches on to what we are doing – #ThankBlackWomen – it will be March 1st, the first day of Women’s History Month. Let’s claim that day, March 1st as our own, Black Women’s Appreciation Day.”
GirlTrek claims to be “the largest public health nonprofit for African-American women and girls in the United States” on its website. In partnership with the Center for Disease control and the Sierra Club, GirlTrek aims to promote and attain better health among Black women and Black girls by building habits of better exercise that start with daily walking.
“The most radical thing we can do is pursue joy when everything around us tells us to be sad. We’re moving forward; we’re walking it out,” Dixon continued in the same press release.
