Creative Time, the New York–based enterprise for public art, has named Justine Ludwig as its new director, succeeding in a post held previously by acting director Alyssa Nitchun and, before her for a short stint, Katie Hollander and Anne Pasternak, who left in 2015 to take the helm of the Brooklyn Museum.

Ludwig previously worked as deputy director and chief curator of Dallas Contemporary, for which she oversaw exhibitions by Pia Camil, Pedro Reyes, and Paola Pivi, and she has curated shows at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, the Tuft University Art Gallery, and the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. She will relocate from Texas to New York soon and assume her new post in June.

In a statement, Ludwig said, “I have admired Creative Time, with its commitment to social justice and art within the public sphere, for many years. I believe that art is one of the greatest tools we have access to in creating better communities, and am committed to a Creative Time that stays ahead of the curve and establishes the golden standard for the social impact of creative visions.”

Suzanne Cochran, Creative Time’s board chair, said, “We are incredibly excited to welcome Justine, and her dynamic curatorial vision, to Creative Time. We are so fortunate to have had Alyssa Nitchun’s invaluable leadership as Acting Director throughout this process, and we can’t wait to see how Creative Time continues to grow and evolve going forward.”

Coming soon as part of Creative Time’s programming is Bring Down the Walls, a work addressing incarceration by the artist Phil Collins, as well as a continuation of its Pledges of Allegiance project involving protest-minded flags designed by politically inclined artists flying in different cities across the U.S. The organization also has a forthcoming project timed around Art Basel in Switzerland and a Creative Summit planned for Miami in the fall.
