Those familiar with the market for Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work knew in spring 2016 that his untitled painting of a head from 1982 would soar to new heights. It was a very rare and great example of the artist’s paintings of heads. It skyrocketed: Japanese collector Yusaku Maezawa paid $110 million for the picture. The only painting that is arguably on par with that one—or, let’s face it, maybe even a little better—is owned by Los Angeles mega-collector Eli Broad, and it doesn’t look like Broad will ever part with the painting, which hangs in the Broad, the private museum he opened in Los Angeles five years ago.
Now artist Eric Doeringer has made a miniature bootleg version of Broad’s painting—just 10 by 8 inches—and is selling it at the Felix art fair next week. The price? Just $1,000.
Doeringer has, in fact, made a whole series of “bootlegs” from Broad’s collection, and called it “The Brode.” It’s a follow-up to his series last year called “Christy’s.” Other works are ones by Cecily Brown, David Hammons, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, and others. There is Jasper Johns’s famous Flag, and there is even Jeff Koons’s famous rabbit, a version of which sold last May at Christies for $91 million, from the collection of the late S.I. Newhouse. Doeringer’s rabbit is enamel on vinyl, and 14 x 9 x 8 inches. (For all intents and purposes, it’s a stuffed animal.) Like the other works, it’s $1,000.
It’s worth pointing out that one of the bootlegs is extremely meta. Doeringer has made a miniature version of Koons’s work Mona Lisa Gazing Ball, a repainted Mona Lisa with a sculptural blue gazing ball added to it. So if you fork over the thousand bucks you get a fake of a fake of the Mona Lisa combined with a fake of a real Jeff Koons. Get it? Yeah, it’s a little complicated!
You can find Doeringer’s “The Brode” bootlegs at the booth of the eccentric organization “A Hug from the Art World” at the Felix Art Fair next week at L.A.’s Roosevelt Hotel. Get there while supplies last.
