News of the 2021 Venice Biennale continues to roll in, with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and France among the countries that have already named the artists who will represent them at the storied exhibition.
Now, Finland has announced its pick for the exhibition: artist Pilvi Takala, whose research-based work analyzes and critiques social structures and behavioral norms. The country’s exhibition will be curated by Christina Li, who has served as curator-at-large and director of Spring Workshop, Hong Kong. The Finnish pavilion is commissioned and produced by Frame Contemporary Art Finland.
Based in Berlin and Helsinki, Takala has previously exhibited at MoMA PS1 and the New Museum in New York, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Kunsthalle Basel, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the ninth Istanbul Biennial, and elsewhere. She has won the Dutch Prix de Rome, the Emdash Award, and the Finnish State Prize for Visual Arts. Takala’s works include the 2018 two-channel video installation The Stroker, which chronicles the artist’s impersonation of a wellness consultant at an exclusive London co-working space, and the 2013 video Drive With Care, for which Takala drew on her experience teaching at an American boarding school.
“The fact that I could start researching early on means I don’t have to make any compromises due to lack of time and can be more ambitious about what I’m making,” Takala said in a statement of her forthcoming exhibition at the biennial.
Raija Koli, Frame’s director and the commissioner of the Finnish pavilion, said in a release that Takala has a “very special artistic practice,” adding that “this exhibition will give her the opportunity to further develop her unique view on the world.”
