The grand opening and ribbon cutting of the District’s fun, STEAM-focused education, the Party Time STEAMing Engineers DC Kids Makerspace was on Dec. 23. Located in Ward 4 at 205 Upshur Street, Northwest, DC Kids Makerspace fosters community building and early access, but it also highlights the opportunities for small businesses to take root and grow within the District.
Ward 4 Council member, Brandon T. Todd supported the local business at Monday’s ribbon cutting.“I am thrilled to support Jasmine Byrd and the opening of the Party Time STEAMing Engineers DC Kid’s Makerspace right here on Upshur Street in Ward 4,” Todd said. “It is bringing much needed resources of STEAM activities and opportunities to local families in this community. We are so proud of Jasmine Byrd, her vision and the work she’s done.”
Local residents, tall and small; including Taylor Johnson, 13, also attended in support. While Johnson made homemade play-dough, the AFRO asked if she would return from programming activities. She relied, “Yes; this makes learning fun!”
Kids finding enjoyment in learning is Byrd’s ultimate goal. She remembered her original intent for opening the space: “I wanted to create a place where children can have fun being enriched with education outside of school- a safe place for children to learn freely.”
Since the launch, Makerspace STEAM sessions operate on a drop-in basis on the weekends; and until Jan. 4, children may drop-in during the winter break throughout week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
