On behalf of Associated Black Charities, we join with the rest of the nation in deep sadness upon the passing of Representative Elijah Cummings. Not only was he a constant champion of our work, he was a beacon of light for all of those in the fight for racial equity, social justice and equal rights. Although this is a very sad day for Baltimore and the country, we can rest knowing that he gave his everything for the city, state and country, and he will forever be remembered in history.
As his wife stated this morning, “He worked until his last breath because he believed our democracy was the highest and best expression of our collective humanity and that our nation’s diversity was our promise, not our problem.” Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, his other family members and friends are in our thoughts and prayers.
