I like to consider myself to be a very creative person. I’m a writer, a podcaster, and a dancer. I even dabble in singing and sketching from time to time. I’m very proud of everything I’ve been able to do with my creativity but I sometimes have those days when I don’t feel like I can do anything at all.
There are times when I don’t feel motivated or inspired and I’m just…blocked, and subsequently frustrated and disappointed. As Melissa Kimble eloquently put it, the world doesn’t move without Black creativity. Our creative contributions have elevated the culture and raise the bar worldwide. But that world-changing creativity can often feel elusive and inspiration can seem out of reach.
Sometimes, I need a word of encouragement. And I get that word from the Word.
The Bible serves as more than a spiritual guide—it can also be a source of encouragement and motivation. When I can’t rely on my own strength, I can always turn to God who knows my heart and knows how to bring what’s within me out into the world.
We’re all put on Earth with the purpose of serving God but how we serve Him depends on us. Whether you’re an artist, writer, musician, or simply someone trying to infuse more creativity into your daily life, there are Bible verses that can uplift and energize your creative spirit, helping you to embrace your unique gifts.
Maybe you’ve been making art for a while now and you’re no longer feeling very inspired. But if you take some time to look around, there is inspiration and awesome wonders all around you that can spark that fire of creativity. Psalm 104:24 reminds us: “How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” Reflect on the diversity and magnitude of God’s creation, and be inspired.
The Bible reminds me that I have everything I need within me to be successful. Exodus 31:3 reads: “I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills.” This verse reminds me that my creative skills are gifts from God and I need only put my gifts out there. I don’t have to be nervous about being vulnerable or letting people see my rough drafts. When God is for you, nothing can be against you.
It’s easy to look around at your friends or on social media and feel like you’re not doing as much or as well as someone else. And that feeling of falling behind can really stifle your creative expression, nothing will feel like it’s enough. But the Bible reminds us to not fall into the trap of comparison. Romans 12:6 tells us: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” This verse reminds you that everyone has unique talents, and the success of others doesn’t diminish your individual value.
Stress is the biggest creativity killer! If I’m tired, if I’m worried, if my mind is focused on other things, I can’t effectively create. Give yourself some peace of mind with this well-known verse from Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It’s a powerful reminder that you have the strength to overcome challenges, stress, lack of resources, and anything else with divine support.
Try reading Colossians 3:2 – “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” There are so many things in this world vying for our attention and it’s easy to get distracted and let your projects fall to the wayside. Shift your thoughts to the future you’re trying to create and rededicate yourself to your craft.
Remember this: confidence can come from Christ. Philippians 1:6 reads: “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” God said what He said. If He gives you a vision, trust that He has the power to bring it to life. Keep creating and walking in your purpose.
Jeremiah 29:11 can be an important reminder that God has a plan and a purpose for us all “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Keep trying new things, keep expressing yourself, and keep leaning on the Lord. He will make your path clear.
