Those who have not yet seen Doug Aitken’s current video installation at 303 Gallery, take note! The Chelsea enterprise announced today that it will stay open all night on Thursday, May 24, into Friday morning, to screen the delirious and quite exhilarating NEW ERA (2018), which addresses the vertiginous power of communications technology today in a three-screen production set within an array of mirrors. It closes at the end of the day on Friday at 6 p.m.
Marathon and late-night screenings have been all the rage with blue-chip galleries and high-production video lately, a tradition that may have been born in 2011 when Chelsea’s Paula Cooper Gallery offered extended hours for Christian Marclay’s The Clock (2010). Really can’t believe that was seven years ago! Other recent examples of the practice have included Gagosian on West 22nd Street in Manhattan staying open around the clock to show a version of Douglas Gordon’s 24-Hour Psycho (1993) last year and Gavin Brown’s Enterprise showing Rachel Rose’s bewitching Lake Valley (2016) at its Harlem location from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to kick off the season last fall.
The Aitken show really is a treat. If you haven’t yet seen it, I recommend grabbing an evening cocktail, and perhaps a little bite, at the nearby Porchlight, and then moseying on over to 303. Enjoy!
