COURTESY THE ARTIST AND 303 GALLERY

Sam Falls, an artist in his early 30s who has become known for artworks made through combinations of photography and painting techniques, has been added to the roster of New York’s 303 Gallery. He recently had a “Projects” solo show at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and his work is currently included in the Biennale of Sydney.

Falls’s output over the past few years has varied widely in style and approach. He has worked in sculpture, painting, photography, and performance, and he frequently creates canvases—or pieces that appear to be canvases—with ghostly images of flora and fauna layered on top of another. At stake in much of his work is an interest in how environments can be recreated in exhibition spaces.

Recent exhibitions by Falls, who is based in Los Angeles and Hudson, New York, include solo outings at Ballroom Marfa, the Kitchen, the Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporaneo di Trento e Rovereto, and the Zabludowicz Collection. His work is also shown by Galerie Eva Presenhuber, which has spaces in Zurich and New York.
