According to the Windy City Times, a transgender woman named T.T. was found dead in Chicago’s Garfield Park on Sunday night.
T.T. was found with her throat slit, and a knife was recovered nearby.
“She was laughing all the time. You could be going through a bad day but once you saw [T.T.], she was such a happy cheerful person [,] all that changed.”

Three days before T.T.’s death, she was threatened, however, T.T. did not go to the police because she feared that they would abuse her. This is a common fear, as many survivors of LGBTQ directed hate have faced discrimination by the police when reporting the crimes committed against them. For instance, of those who reported their experience to the cops, “80% said they were met with indifference and hostility.”
LGBTQ women of color are also targeted more than their white counterparts, as in 2015, 54% of those killed in hate violence homicides of LGBTQ people are trans women of color.
