Deontay was the subject of a violent interaction with some Baltimore police officers last week. The police officers attempted to arrest the 13-year old boy and his 11-year old sister. The video of that incident went viral and now the Baltimore Police Department is launching an investigation into the incident.
According to news reports about the encounter, Deontay and his sister were looking for their cat that happened to be lost. They wandered into their neighbor’s yard who called the police department and told them she was being robbed. When the police officers arrived on the scene, they detained the children. Soon after their mother Kimberly Townes arrived to remove the children from the officers’ custody and the situation turned violent. Deontay and an officer got into a physical altercation where one officer tried to put handcuffs on the child and started hitting him with a closed fist. As Deontay is pushed into the car, the officer said: “I’m about to send this kid to the f*****hospital.” He later said, “if I see this kid again, I’m going to beat the sh** out of him”. According to news reports, another officer called an ambulance so Deontay could get treated for his injuries.
The officer later claimed Deontay grabbed his genitals. Townes told the officers Deontay is mentally disabled. According to news reports, the Baltimore Police Department released a statement about the Deontay incident. It states:
“This was clearly a very hectic and chaotic scene that the officers were dispatched to. We take these matters very seriously and Commissioner Tuggle has demonstrated his commitment to transparency and accountability. This case is being reviewed by the Office of Professional Responsibility as we speak, and that would include the video clips taken by civilians and posted to social media, as well as the police officers body worn cameras, that we hope provide a more conclusive version of events from start to finish.”
