President Donald Trump spoke out against the reported racist and homophobic attack on Jussie Smollett but quickly shifted his comments to how a wall is needed at the southern border, TMZ reported Thursday.

Trump was speaking in the Oval Office when reporters asked him about Smollett, who said the attackers yelled “MAGA country,” referencing the president’s 2016 campaign slogan Make America Great Again, as they beat him, poured bleach on him and put a noose around his neck.

“That I can tell you is horrible. I’ve seen it … last night. It doesn’t get worse, as far as I’m concerned,” he said. Trump then segued his remarks into the border wall. “What I think is the worst sin of all, is the fact that we’re allowing people to come into this country and sell drugs, and human traffic and do all of these horrible things.”

Chicago police have said that they cannot confirm whether the attackers made any MAGA references but have released surveillance video of “potential persons of interest.”
