Like some of the hundreds of the thousands of government employees who are currently furloughed or working without pay, Second Lady and artist Karen Pence has taken on a part-time job, as an art teacher at a Christian school in Virginia, according to Politico.

When her husband, Vice President Mike Pence, was a member of Congress, Karen worked at the school, Immanuel Christian School in Springfield, which explicitly states in various documents that students, employees, and parents who identify as gay cannot be part of the institution.

Also verboten for members of the ICS community: condoning gay marriage, identifying as trans, watching pornography, and “heterosexual activity outside of marriage.”

A spokesperson for Karen defended her employ at the school to Poltico, saying, “Pence has returned to the school where she previously taught for 12 years. It’s absurd that her decision to teach art to children at a Christian school, and the school’s religious beliefs, are under attack.”

As Poltico notes, last year saw the release of a children’s book about the Pence family’s rabbit, Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of the Vice President, illustrated by her and written by one of the couple’s daughters, Charlotte. Another volume, Marlon Bundo’s Best Christmas Ever, is due out later this year.
