Ryan Lee Gallery now represents the estate of the late painter George Miyasaki, with a solo exhibition of the artist’s work planned for May 2019. Best known for his Abstract Expressionist work during the 1950s and ’60s, Miyasaki was a prominent figure in the Bay Area’s art community, studying under Nathan Oliveira and Richard Diebenkorn at the California College of Arts & Crafts.

“In recent years, there have been so many rediscoveries of previously marginalized artists,” Jeff Lee, co-owner of the gallery, told ARTnews. “It feels like the canon of art history is constantly expanding, and that’s really only beginning for Asian-American artists.”

Lee continued, “With George Miyasaki, he’s been left out of the history of American art within institutions and galleries. We hope that through our intervention there’ll be much more recognition. As an Asian American, I believe in the power of representation and visibility, and the originality of Miyasaki’s work deserves to be more attended.”
