Happy Birthday To Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Hello everyone, how are you? I am telling you right now it will be a busy weekend, so many events and parades to celebrate a man who was a “Drum Major for Justice” from 1929-1968 and to show our appreciation the world celebrates.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Parade in Baltimore on Jan. 20 from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. The parade commemorates the life of civil rights leader and icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Spectators are welcome to view the parade along the route on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Eutaw & Baltimore Streets.

Among his many compliments for civil rights, perhaps Dr. King’s best known and widely publicized action was his appearance at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It was here that he delivered his famous I have a Dream speech. King’s and other Civil Rights leader’s efforts finally paid off with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Events:

Maryland State Education Association’s (MSEA) 35th annual Tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will be Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Hilton Baltimore BWI AirPort, 1739 W. Nursery Road, Linthicum Heights, Maryland. This year’s theme is “African and Latino American Experiences of Everyday People.” The celebration will feature student performances and keynote address by Dr. Ivory Toldson. The celebration will also honor the recipients of the Reginald F. Lewis Student Art Awards as well as MSEA Sponsored Awards.

“LEA” will be singing “Songs of the Civil Rights Movement” to kick off Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. It will be held at the Carroll Arts Center in Westminster on Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. Her songs will include the classic gospel, folk, rock, jazz and blues that became the soundtrack for a generation of Americans in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Prince George’s County Top Ladies of Distinction 8th Annual MLK Prayer Breakfast on Jan. 20, 8:30 a.m.-12 noon at the Camelot By Martins, 13901 Central Avenue, Upper Marlboro, Maryland 20774. There will be a delectable breakfast to feed your belly and soul. Also there will be vendors.

MLK Day Celebration at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture celebrates this day through education and reflection on Monday, January 20th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will partner with the Maryland Food Bank for a food drive. Visitors can receive free admission to their Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration with the donation of five non-perishable foods. Throughout the day, families can participate in art workshops, listen to lectures and enjoy performances from members of the Baltimore community and join the Civil Rights Movement through a virtual reality experience.

Todd Marcus, bass clarinetist and a renowned musician will be performing at the Walters Art Museum, Graham Auditorium, 10 W. Centre Street in Baltimore on Saturday, January 18 form 1 p.m. -4 p.m. along with many other award winning Baker Performing Artists to start off the weekend for Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration. Open to the public and it is free.

Baltimore 2020 Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade on Monday, Jan. 20 starting at noon. The Baltimore Office of Promotion & Arts is proud to present the 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade alongside the City of Baltimore. More than 70 groups will participate in the parade including high school and community bands, honor/color guards, equestrian units, fraternities and sororities, dance squads, and civic organizations. The parade will start at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Eutaw and Baltimore Streets. The honorary grand marshal is Raheem DeVaughn, the three-time Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and international R&B star.

The Kings Landing Women’s Service Club will host their 45th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 20th from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Martin’s West, 6817 Dogwood Rd. in Baltimore. The keynote speaker is John M. Wesley, Author/Musician, Vocalist; Public information Officer, Baltimore City Office of Civil Rights & Wage Enforcement. The Kings Landing Women’s Service 2020 Woman of the year is Stacy L. Rodgers who is the County Administrative Officer Baltimore County Government and the Mistress of Ceremonies is Ernestine Jones who is the Host of WEAA’s Gospel Grace at Day Break. Happy Birthday to Ron Scott, owner of the Caton Castle Lounge located on Caton Avenue & Hilton Street. He will be celebrating his birthday on Jan. 18 from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. The entertainment will include Benjie Porecki on keyboards, Brad Collins on Sax and John Lamkin III on drums. Keystone Korner Baltimore located 1530 Lancaster Street in Fells Point Baltimore celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the Dunbar Alumni Big Band led by jazz educator/trombonist, Charles Funn. This jazz ensemble was organized in 1995.
