In a recent PushBlack round-up, we reported that the Justice Department will be cutting ties with private prisons. While this decision marks progress, there is much more work to be done as the decision only affects 13 prisons (Black Youth Project).

“While this is a significant move given the times we live in, these contracts, with Corrections Corporation of America and GEO Group Inc., only account for 7% of the industry’s revenue.”

In addition, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency recently signed a $1 billion contract with Corrections Corporations of America, which is one of the largest private prison companies (Washington Post).

Here at PushBlack, we believe that private prisons should be abolished. It is a shame to see Black bodies being imprisoned for the economic gain of private prison companies and their shareholders.
