Actress, singer and stage director Phylicia Rashad was announced as the director for the upcoming production of Charles Randolph-Wright’s play Blue.
“I am happy to be directing this play that brought me so much joy,” the Tony winner said in a statement, according to Playbill.com. “It affirms the importance of theatre and its power to touch the human heart.”
The play focuses on the Clarks, a notable family dealing with the negatives that come with good fortune, and the layers of their socially constructed image.
The jazz and soul-infused score will be composed by Nona Hendryx.
“I am excited that Phylicia, Charles, and Brian [Moreland] are bringing Blue back to the stage,” Hendryx said. “I am thrilled to be part of a play about a family coping with life, love, secrets, and lies.”
Rashad, best known for her role as Claire Huxtable on the hit series, The Cosby Show, previously starred in the Broadway and Off-Broadway productions of Blue in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Before helming this Broadway production, she directed other stage work including August Wilson’s classics such as Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner’s Come and Fences.
A cast, theatre and design team will be announced at a later date. Blue, produced by Moreland, Eric Falkenstein and Ron Simmons. will open on Broadway in spring 2020.
