The Prix Meret Oppenheim, a prize for artists and cultural figures in Switzerland, has named its winners for 2019: photographer Shirana Shahbazi, the architecture firm Meili & Peter Architekten, and journalist Samuel Schellenberg. Winners of the prestigious prize each take home CHF 40,000 (about $39,800).

Shahbazi, who is based in Zurich, is well-known for her still lifes and abstractions, which are intended to rework genres prevalent throughout art history. Her work has appeared in the 2012 edition of the Museum of Modern Art’s “New Photography” exhibition and in the 2003 Venice Biennale, and she has had solo outings at the Kunsthaus Hamburg in Germany, the Kunsthalle Bern in Switzerland, and the New Museum in New York.

The jury that selected the winners was chaired by Giovanni Carmine, the director of the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, and also included art historian Laura Arici; artist Valentin Carron; architect Victoria Easton; Julie Enckell Julliard, the head of the cultural development department at HEAD in Geneva; artist Anne-Julie Raccoursier; and artist Anselm Stalder.
