The 2018 Home Depot Coach of the Year Award will be presented to Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. ET, on ESPN. Kelly is the only head coach to receive the honor a second and third time. Also on award night, as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Special presented by Daltile at 6 p.m. on ESPNU, the John Mackey Award for outstanding tight end will be presented to T.J. Hockenson of Iowa.

Kelly, in his ninth season as head coach for the Fighting Irish, led this year’s team to an undefeated season and its first berth to the College Football Playoff. He is the winningest active coach in the FBS with an overall record of 252-91-2 in 28 years as a head coach. Among his honors, Kelly is a two time AFCA Division II Coach of the year (’02,’03), three time Big East Coach of the Year (’07, ‘08, ’09), AP College Football Coach of the Year (‘12), Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year (’12), SN Coach of the Year (’12), Walter Camp Coach of the Year (’12). Notre Dame will face Clemson in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 29 at 4 p.m., on ESPN.

Hockenson, a sophomore from Iowa, has been named the country’s most outstanding tight end by the Friends of John Mackey, becoming the first underclassman to win the award in its 19-year history. The John Mackey Award is given to the collegiate tight end who best exemplifies the play, sportsmanship, academics, and community values of NFL Hall of Fame Tight End John Mackey.

Hockenson had 46 receptions for 717 yards and six touchdowns on the season, and has amassed 70 receptions for 1,037 yards and nine touchdowns during his two years as a Hawkeye. As a sophomore, he is already ranked 38th in career receiving yards for Iowa.

 The Home Depot College Football Awards will also include live presentations of:

  • Nine National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) player awards
  • The NCFAA Contributions to College Football Award to Historically Black Colleges and Universities
  • The Disney Spirit Award recognizing inspirational Purdue Football super fan Tyler Trent
  • Student-athletes selected to the Walter Camp All-America Team
