Per Knutås, who currently serves as chief conservator at the Cleveland Museum of Art, has been appointed as head of conservation at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in Texas. Knutås will assume the post in July, following the retirement of David Bomford, chairman of the institution’s department of conservation.

The MFA Houston also announced the retirement of Zahira Véliz Bomford, who’s senior paintings conservator, and Audrey Jones Beck, curator of European art.

In his new position, Knutås will manage a team of 11 conservators and oversee the care of the collections at the MFA Houston, and its two outposts: Bayou Bend and Rienzi.

Knutås has worked at the CMA for almost seven years, where he recently established a fully endowed training center for Chinese paintings conservation. And, in 2015, he organized the first conferences on Asian materials conservation.

From 2009 to 2012, Knutås was chief conservator at the Cincinnati Art Museum, and he has also held positions at the Moderna Museet and the Swedish National Heritage Board in Stockholm, as well as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

In a statement, Knutås said, “I am thrilled to embark on this exciting opportunity. I’ve been able to lead many successful projects at the Cleveland Museum of Art, notably the establishment of the conservation department for Chinese paintings, a modern and contemporary conservation program, and increased education initiatives for the public. I am grateful for my time in Cleveland and look forward to being a part of the continued growth of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.”
