Cynicism

In a think piece called “Art Won’t Save Us,” Anna Khachiyan meditates on whether art has meditated on the fallout from the 2016 U.S. Presidential election in any meaningful way. “Instead of the artistic renaissance predicted by the likes of [Jerry] Saltz and [Joyce Carol] Oates,” she writes, we’ve mainly gotten ineffective institutional critique and lots of panels. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantra, Indonesia, is the official home of the holdings of Haryanto Adikoesoemo, but MACAN aims to be more than just your average private institution. In a new interview, its director explains that MACAN will offer audiences in Indonesia—a country that, because of colonialism, has long followed in suit with Dutch tastes—a form of cultural independence.
