Forbes magazine has released its 2019 list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, and a lot of people have noted the glaring omission of one woman who is not only immensely popular, but also had a stellar year: former First Lady Michelle Obama.

“In 2019, women around the globe took action, claiming leadership positions in government, business, philanthropy and media,” wrote the publication. “These trailblazers are not to be messed with.”

They then went on to list the women who exemplify that statement, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has made 14 appearances in the list’s 16-year history, being crowned at the top of the list for the ninth consecutive year.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi came in at number three, but Black women in general seemed to be woefully underrepresented, with Oprah Winfrey coming in at 20; Rihanna nabbing the 61st spot; Beyoncé comes in at 66;  Ava DuVernay at 79; Serena Williams 81; Sahle-Work Zewde, Ethiopia’s first female president, making the 93rd spot on the list; and the British-Nigerian Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, sliding in under the wire at 98.

That’s it as far as Black Girl Magic is concerned, no mention of Obama despite Penguin Random House believing her book Becoming has taken the spot as the best-selling memoir of all time.

CNBC reports that, “this year’s top 100 females list featured women from six categories — business (31), technology (17), finance (12), media & entertainment (14), politics & policy (22) and philanthropy (4). Together, they control or influence more than $2.3 trillion in revenue and oversee nearly 6.5 million employees.”
