Despite Beyoncé’s proclamation that girls run the world, it is widely accepted throughout the globe that, “this is a man’s world.” However it’s days such as October 11, the International Day of Girls, where the world is reminded it would be “nothing without a woman or girl,” as James Brown sung.
Pretty much since the end of her husband’s presidency, First Lady Michelle Obama has been vehemently rejecting any probes about her interest in politics, yet she used an appearance on the “Today” show-on the International Day of the Girl Child- to discuss plans on how she hopes to empower young women. Obama announced her new initiative “Global Girls Alliance,” an initiative to support adolescent girl’s education.
“The future of our world is only as bright as our girls,” Obama said.
Through Global Girls Alliance the first lady hopes to help more than 1500 grassroots organizations throughout the world to support young women who face issues in their local communities. Some of these issues include lack of access to education and basic resources or being forced into marriage before the age of 18.
“Nearly 100 million girls are missing out on school entirely, and a lifetime of opportunity,” Obama said, a Princeton and Harvard Law School graduate.
“Think about our daughters, all of their promise, all they have in them. That is true for millions of girls around the country, and they are battling through misrepresentation, violence and stigma to get their way into a classroom,” she told Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie.
The former first lady hopes to encourage young women to be active participants in empowering fellow females.
“So we want to play a role in building an alliance of young people who are out there doing the work on the ground. And we want to give them an opportunity to network with one another, because working on these issues out in the world can be lonely,” Obama said. “They need to have a link to resources and training and technological support. The [Global Girls] alliance is going to provide that for them.”
