MELANIE CAMPBELL, PRESIDENT & CEO, NATIONAL COALITION ON BLACK CIVIC PARTICIPATION AND CONVENER, BLACK WOMEN’S ROUNDTABLE, OFFERS CONDOLENCES AND THOUGHTS REGARDING THE UNTIMELY PASSING OF BALTIMORE CONGRESSMAN ELIJAH E. CUMMINGS

Washington, DC (October 17, 2019) — National Coalition on Black Civic Participation President & CEO, Melanie Campbell, released the following statement on the passing of Congressman Elijah Cummings:

“My heart is heavy to learn this morning that Congressman Elijah Cummings has joined the ancestors. We mourn the loss of a gentle giant and servant leader, who we just honored for his leadership as a public servant and advocate for good governance last night at The National Coalition’s 2019 Spirit of Democracy Awards Celebration, under the theme, ‘Celebrate the Diversity of Our Democracy.’  We will miss his fierce leadership on Capitol Hill as an unrelenting fighter for justice and good government. He was a key leader in the fight to save our democracy from peril by this current Administration and the lack of leadership by the GOP. We mourn with his family as they endure the loss of the family man he was. We thank them for sharing him with the community, the nation and the world.  He served with honor and courage as a truly valiant warrior for all of us.”
