During a performance of “Fiddler on the Roof” by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on Nov. 14, an anti-Semitic outburst reminded many in attendance of an atmosphere of intolerance, which seems pervasive in America.

According to the Associated Press, a man in the balcony of the Hippodrome Theatre in downtown Baltimore allegedly yelled out, “Heil Hitler! Heil Trump!” during the intermission of the venerable play. “Fiddler on the Roof,” is a play set in a Jewish village in czarist Russia and many members of Baltimore’s Jewish community were in attendance when the man yelled the anti-Semitic phrase. According to some in attendance he also yelled “MAGA,” which stands for Make America Great Again, the campaign slogan of Donald Trump. After the outburst, the man left the theatre. Police were called to the Hippodrome after the incident, but no arrests were made and no report was filed.

Almost three weeks ago on Oct. 27, Robert Bowers gunned 11 Jewish members of the Tree of Life synagogue, in the Jewish community of Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh, Pa. It is the deadliest attack on Jews in American history. Bowers, 46, a virulent anti-Semite on social media prior to the attack, has been charged 29 federal crimes and 36 state crimes.
