Kimberli Meyer is no longer the executive director of the University Art Museum at California State University, Long Beach, according to the Long Beach Post. Meyer could not be immediately reached for comment.
Meyer joined the museum in 2016 from the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles, where she was director. She had just overseen the opening of an exhibition by lauren woods (she styles her name with all lowercase letters) at the university called “American MONUMENT,” which takes as its subject the recent killings of African-Americans by police officers.
In a statement on the university website,Cyrus Parker-Jeannette, dean of the college of arts, said, “While I cannot comment on personnel matters, I can say this decision was part of a longer-term process. The ‘American MONUMENT’ project continues at the museum as directed by the artist lauren woods. The installation is designed to provoke open and free discussion. Our campus is a place for civil discourse and artistic expression. American MONUMENT is part of this culture.”
This news comes compounds amid a number of high-profile departures for museum leaders with politically engaged programming, including Laura Raicovich as director of the Queens Museum and Helen Molesworth as chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
Updated; 09/17/2018, 7:25 pm: A previous version of this article incorrectly attributed the statement to Jeff Bliss.
