Calvin Mims and Dwight Smith of Fayetteville, North Carolina, are avid collectors of African-American art. They describe why it’s important to preserve and share the stories told through black artists. “Art defines a culture. Art is a footprint that a culture is measured by,” said Mims, who is executive director of Ellington-White Community Development Corp., which operates a gallery in downtown Fayetteville. Smith is an artist and professor at Fayetteville State University.
This is one of four profiles by The Fayetteville Observer on Fayetteville residents who are keepers of black history.
