“Get Out” writer and director Jordan Peele will host and narrate a new “Twilight Zone” series, CBS announced on Thursday.
The Academy Award-winning writer said he was initially reluctant to join the project because filling the shoes of the great Rod Serling ― creator and host of the original “Twilight Zone” ― sounded intimidating.
“The realization, for me, was that it was an opportunity to attempt to continue with Serling’s mission,” Peele told Variety in August, talking about his company Monkeypaw co-producing the new series. At the time, Variety described him as resisting, but not ruling out, the idea of also taking on Serling’s on-screen role.
“If we approach it without ego and sort of bow to Serling, that will hopefully suffice for our fellow ‘Twilight Zone’ fans but also bring back a show that I think is needed right now. Because it’s a show that has always helped us look at ourselves, hold a mirror up to society,” Peele told the magazine.
The original “Twilight Zone” ran from 1959 to 1964. It touched on issues of race, gender, beauty, technology, religion and science in 30-minute morality plays. They usually ended with someone getting what they deserved or learning a valuable lesson the hard way. (There was usually also a lot of maniacal laughing, of which we are big fans.)
The new show doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but we can’t wait to venture back into … the Twilight Zone.
