Former ESPN analyst Jemele Hill hit Stephen Colbert on Thursday, talking Trump and pushing back on his hateful rhetoric that once resulted in her exit from the network.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Colbert, host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert offered his support of Hill for speaking out against Trump, even if it cost her a job.
Hill rebounded with a new gig and now serves as a writer for The Atlantic.
Hill caused a stir online when she tweeted that Trump was “a white supremacist who surrounds himself with other white supremacists. Show me the lie.” She got suspended before ultimately deciding to part ways with the network.
Trump fired back “With Jemele Hill at the mike, it is no wonder ESPN ratings have tanked, in fact, tanked so badly it is the talk of the industry.”
In response, Hill told Colbert that she was more delighted than mad at the clapback.
“Number one, I was super impressed he spelled my name right. Grammar is not really his thing,” she said. And as a journalist “you live for that moment,” she said and took the criticism as a compliment.
Hill said politics and sports have always intersected and been used as a platform to further social agendas, adding that Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson are prime examples of athletes who made a difference using their voice.
“They’ve always been connected … they’ve always touched and mixed together. In my experience, people who object to that intersection [of sports and politics] don’t like the opinion or viewpoint being expressed,” she added.
“To me politics is when you have a pro argument and a con argument. Is anyone out there pro racism? Or pro police brutality? What are we arguing about? It’s just that people have gotten so polarized about issues that, frankly, we should all be on board with,” she explained.
Hill hasalso landed a new opportunity as the voice of LeBron James’ Shut Up and Dribble Showtime documentary.
